What Are Dental Crowns?
Dental professionals design dental crowns to provide permanent, aesthetically pleasing protection for underlying natural teeth.
At Simple Dental, we construct our custom crowns with either ceramic or CEREC technology. Ceramic crowns require an extra waiting process and a fitting of a temporary crown. With CEREC technology, our dentists can complete your dental crowns in one day.
Some dental professionals construct crowns out of other materials. At Simple Dental, we find ceramic and CEREC technology provide the most natural-looking results and flexible pricing options for differing budgets.
With good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups, crowns can last for decades. Speak with your dentist to decide which crown technology is best for your dental needs.
How Dental Crowns Work
Like many dental procedures, dental crown services begin with a thorough dental examination. During this initial step, the dentist takes dental x-rays and performs a physical inspection of the tooth. For teeth with extensive decay, either fillings or a root canal procedure prepares the tooth for the crown cap.
If the tooth, roots, gum, and jaw structures are healthy, the dentist will begin the dental crown process. If you have a prominent tooth structure above the gum line, the dentist will reshape it to prepare it for the crown fitting. The dentist uses a filling material to “build up” the tooth to support a crown for teeth with significant damage.
Next, the dental professional takes an impression of the target tooth. Typically, this process utilizes a dental-grade putty to capture the shape of the remaining tooth accurately. Depending on tooth placement, availability, and other conditions, a digital scan of the affected tooth may be preferable. Accurate scans or impressions of the tooth above and below the gum line provide an ideal template for crowns that fit well.
For traditional ceramic crowns, the waiting period spans two to three weeks. The dentist fits the affected tooth with a temporary crown that lasts during the waiting period. During this time, the lab creates a custom-fitting ceramic dental crown.
Patients who receive temporary fillings must protect the tooth, the temporary filling, and the surrounding area from damage or bacteria while the lab creates the permanent crown.
Once the dentist receives the completed crown from the lab, the patient returns for a fitting. Follow-up appointments address any discomfort or other issues.
For CEREC crowns, patients receive their permanent crown during the same business day. Using comprehensive scans of the mouth and affected tooth, a specialized machine mills an exact, expertly-fitting tooth from a block of solid ceramic. Next, the dentist bonds the crown to the target tooth. Like traditional crowns, a patient may schedule follow-up appointments to address any potential, but unlikely, discomfort.
